Last year they went to San Diego and this year they decided to come and visit me!! I was so excited. When I lived in Utah, I would go to dinner almost every Sunday at Julie’s house. I really miss her and her adorable kids.

Julie and Ashley got into town on Friday morning. We spent Friday walking around San Francisco. Our adventure started out by seeing a flash mob in Union Square. It was REALLY cool. We also did some shopping in Union Square and walked around Chinatown. We got pedicures and ate gelato in the park. We explored Telegraph Hill and Coit tower.

Flash Mob

Julie & Me

After our pedicures

Telegraph Hill- Ashley & Julie

My favorite thing we did on Friday happened to be dinner. Yelp is huge in the Bay area. It is a website where people can go on and rate restaurants, businesses, etc. It’s usually pretty accurate. Dave and I have had a lot of luck finding new places to eat based on Yelp ratings. I found an Italian restaurant on Yelp for us to try out for dinner. It was quite the experience. It was a quaint little restaurant with an authentic Italian flare. The food was good, but the entertainment was the best part. There was a man named Vince at the restaurant. We think he was the owner, but he was quite the character. Within two minutes of sitting down, he came over, told us the daily specials, offered us free dessert, and did a magic trick. He would often get distracted by customers who walked that he knew and would leave our table. He would always come back a few minutes later with another magic trick- some of them were completely mind boggling. He had a very short attention span, but managed to do an excellent job entertaining every table at the restaurant. We figured out one of his numbers trick, but I am still stumped on all of his card tricks. We had planned on going to a chick flick after dinner, but we were at dinner for over 3 hours because Vince was so entertaining. The most ironic thing is that no one on Yelp had even mentioned Vince and his magic tricks, but it definitely made our dinner experience.

Vince- The magician, possible restaurant owner, waiter, etc.

Me trying one of his balancing tricks. They were perfect days to spend outside. The girls stayed in a hotel in San Francisco the whole weekend. Dave came up and joined us on Saturday. We had such a fun time and I’m glad he could make it. We started out by going on a tour of Alcatraz. I have vague memories of visiting Alcatraz when I was about 14. It was neat to go back 10 years later because I had definitely forgotten a lot about the history of Alcatraz.

On the ferry

Alcatraz Island

Inside the prison- Listening to the audio tour

It was a bit spooky inside the cells.

The prisoners had a great view of the bay! The guy that’s posing (or whatever he’s doing) in the background of this picture tried to steal someone’s camera out of their pocket a few hours later when we were downtown. The guy who’s camera he tried to steal punched him pretty hard in the face so he didn’t get away with the camera, but thank goodness we didn’t have him take the picture. Who knows what would have happened.

So beautiful!!

The rest of the day was spent walking around Fisherman’s Warf, eating fish & chips and clam chowder in bread bowls- yummy!, shopping, and visiting Ghirardelli square

On Sunday, we spent most of the afternoon walking around Golden Gate park and visiting the beach. The park is gigantic and there is a ton to see. It is somewhat like a mini Central park in NYC. It was pretty chilly so we took a bus tour which was a cool way to see the park. We didn’t really take any pictures on Sunday because it was too cold outside. Thanks for coming to visit Julie and Ashley! It was a great weekend!
Dave and Liz Morrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10640374259097037992noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-653840656052414898.post-27929491064175204712012-04-24T12:14:00.001-07:002012-04-24T12:17:31.187-07:00Easter
Easter weekend was pretty fun. We had 2 other couples over to dye Easter eggs and play games. I love dying Easter eggs! Here’s our masterpieces.

I also had what I initially thought was a great idea to make Dave and I Easter baskets that I saw on Pinterest. (I think I was really trying to avoid writing my talk for Easter Sunday church, which it definitely helped me put it off for a couple hours). We have no extra room in our apartment to store holiday decorations, Easter baskets, or things of that sort, so I wanted to have baskets that I didn’t feel bad throwing away. This was the first and last time I will ever be making our baskets. It took forever and the Easter basket was only about 4”X4” so it was more of an Easter basket for a diabetic or someone on a diet. I only made one basket because it took so long. It turned out cute, but was definitely not worth the effort. I decided to take a picture of the basket before I threw it away so I could look back and laugh at my silly idea.

Dave and Liz Morrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10640374259097037992noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-653840656052414898.post-14815598653807232812012-04-09T11:07:00.001-07:002012-04-09T11:07:18.081-07:00Ryan & Kerali’s Wedding
Dave and I were able to go to Newport Beach, CA for Dave’s good friend Ryan’s wedding. Ryan and Kerali are such a great couple and we were thrilled we could join in the celebration on their big day. We could not be happier for them! They were married in the Newport Beach temple and had a reception that evening in Kerali’s parents’ backyard. It was a charming reception. The burlap and lace decorations were absolutely adorable. The food was delicious. There was even cheesecake- my favorite.

At the temple

Dave, Shawn, Ryan, John & Ryan

Pictures from the reception. They were very nice and let spouses/ significant others come along. We left Friday afternoon. One of the other first years and her boyfriend (who came in town from Hawaii) rode with us which made the drive even better. We arrived at the cabin around 7pm. We were the first ones there which was nice because we got first dibs on where to sleep- sort of. There were (I think) 27 of us total and they had divided the beds up beforehand according to where the employee falls in the ranking system. The higher up you were in the company, the better the bed you got. Dave and I were assigned a convertible bed which meant either a futon or couch bed. Dave and I choose the room off of the main family room which we thought was a great option. We had dinner once most everyone arrived and watched a movie. I went to bed around midnight because I was exhausted from working Thursday night. Dave joined me in bed around 2am. Quite a few people arrived after we went to bed, and the party sure did start once everyone got there. Most everyone was up til 4:30 or so. They were all hanging out in the family room outside Dave and I’s bedroom. It turns out the drunker everyone got, the louder they became. Needless to say, we were very happy when they decided to call it a night. Call me old and boring, but I have come to really appreciate the couple times a week where I can sleep at night.

We got up around 7:30 in the morning. I was honestly surprised at how awake and chipper everyone was for only sleeping for 3 hours. We then headed for the Heavenly Resort. Dave and I started out on the bunny hill. Dave had not been skiing since High School and I hadn’t skied since I was very young because I switched over to snowboarding about 10 years ago (even though I was not very good at it). We went down the bunny hill a couple of times and then moved on to the green runs. We had a ton of fun. It was a beautiful day with temperatures in the 50’s. I had dressed in 9 layers of clothes that morning because I didn’t want to get cold. After I had gotten dressed to leave, Dave told me I looked soft and ready. Oh Dave, always making me the laugh. After an hour or so of skiing, Dave and I both had to get rid of a few layers of clothing because we were so hot. It could not have been a more perfect day for skiing!

The soft and ready Liz<img style="background-image: none; The runs right above the lodge are double black diamond runs. Because of this, you have to take a ski lift over these advanced runs to a higher point on the mountain to get to the green, blue or other black runs. Ski lifts scare me to death. I am usually not afraid of heights, but ski lifts are a definite exception. I was ok on the way up, but taking the lift on the way down was SO SCARY! The mountain was very steep and with the lift being pretty high up it was a recipe for sheer terror. My heart was beating so fast. I was holding on for dear life while closing my eyes. Dave had to keep reminding me to breathe. There was one point where the lift stopped so the chair starting swinging and I think I almost peed my pants. I have never been so excited to have my feet back on the ground. When I looked back up at the lift after getting off, I asked Dave how that did not scare him. He told me he was scared, but that he didn’t think it would help the situation if he told me. Smart move Dave. Two of us freaking out for 249 seconds… (yes I counted to try and distract myself) would have been a bad combo.

Saturday night, Chris (the partner over the team/ account) took us out for a delicious dinner. That night we also realized how sunburned our faces were. Dave’s definitely more so than mine. Lesson learned- we will never forget to put on sunscreen before skiing again. This was such a great weekend vacation and it was nice to get to know some of Dave’s coworkers. He works with so many fun and entertaining people.
Dave and Liz Morrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10640374259097037992noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-653840656052414898.post-1654084577884907842012-03-05T13:41:00.003-08:002012-03-05T13:41:23.696-08:00Valentine’s Day
Last year, Dave and I decided that we would rather not deal with the restaurant crowds on Valentine’s Day. Dave was in charge of dinner this Valentine’s Day. I felt bad because I had the day off so I had plenty of time to cook dinner, but Dave insisted on taking his turn with the V-day celebrations. Dave had to work, but still managed to go grocery shopping and cook dinner for us. He was so thoughtful and made a vegetarian meal because that is definitely what I prefer. He also rented a movie (Water for Elephants) so I would have something to do while he made us dinner. We ended up watching it together after dinner and it was one of the better movies I‘ve seen lately. What can I say, I’m a very lucky girl to have such a great Valentine/ husband!!!

Dave and Liz Morrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10640374259097037992noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-653840656052414898.post-15191852383172267912012-03-05T13:41:00.001-08:002012-03-05T13:41:05.980-08:00Happy Birthday Dave
Last month Dave celebrated his 26th birthday. (I can’t believe we’re both going to be in our upper 20’s this year- makes us sound so old!) It was a pretty low key celebration. He did not want a birthday party this year so it was just me and Dave. After he got off work, we went to dinner. Dave wanted to go to Red Robin so he could get a hamburger and fries- definitely 2 of his favorites. We also went shopping so Dave could spend his birthday money. We spent the rest of the night opening his presents, watching one of our favorite TV shows, and just hanging out. Happy birthday Dave!

Dave and Liz Morrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10640374259097037992noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-653840656052414898.post-53941701500121981282012-02-10T10:39:00.001-08:002012-02-10T17:08:36.374-08:00Stay-cation
Dave had quite a few business trips when he first started his job. It made for a few very lonely weeks, but on the plus side he racked up quite a lot of points at a pretty sweet hotel. We took advantage of these points and spent the weekend in San Francisco.

Our hotel- The Omni

On Friday we walked around Union Square which is always fun. It was also Chinese New Year and so I thought it would be neat to check out Chinatown. I had pictured Chinese lanterns galore, Chinese dragons roaming the streets, gongs going off, etc. I think this vision somewhat resembled a faint memory I have of a Chinese New Year’s parade in elementary school. It was quite the opposite. Everything was closed for the night and there were only a few Chinese lanterns. I was a bit disappointed, but maybe my expectations we a bit far fetched. On Saturday, we woke up and had breakfast in bed. This was quite nice I must say (especially because I didn’t have to wash the sheets afterwards from the muffin crumbs that were all over). We decided to walk though Chinatown again because it was on our way to our next stop. It was a bit more festive during the day and had quite a fun atmosphere.

We continued on to Little Italy. I really liked Little Italy. There were so many quaint Italian restaurants that looked delicious. I had read online about a hole in the wall pizza place that literally had thousands of great reviews. We went there for lunch and it lived up to my expectations. It was really good! Our next stop was a walking tour on Telegraph Hill. I had heard about San Francisco walking tours and thought we should check one out. There are a ton of them and each walking tour highlights a different landmark, historical feature, or tourist attraction in the San Francisco area. There were many that sounded appealing- from San Francisco Victorian mansions to Nob Hill, it was hard to decide on just one. The tour we went on covered Telegraph Hill and Coit tower. Our tour guide was excellent. She told us unique and funny stories of the history of Telegraph Hill, showed us where Mrs. Ghirardelli lived until her passing, pointed out the oldest inhabitable building in San Francisco, and much more. It was such a fun way to get to know this part of the city. These are some of our pictures from the tour. The views from Telegraph Hill are spectacular and we were lucky to have a very clear day- no fog at all!

The steps in this picture are in front of a row of houses and the foliage is their shared backyard/ garden. He works days and I work nights. Dave also works quite a bit (as in almost every waking moment of everyday…poor guy). All of this means our time together is very limited. One of our goals for 2012 is to go on one date a month. One date sounds a bit pathetic, but it’s realistic and better than none. Dave plans the odd month dates and I plan the even months. Dave planned a fun date for us this month. We went to Dave & Busters. The food was tasty and we had a blast playing games. Some of the highlights included us winning 100 tickets on Deal or No Deal (too bad this wasn’t a win on the actual show), Dave getting slammed in the face with a basketball while playing hoopshoot, but not missing a beat, and Dave winning the jackpot on hoopshoot. Great start to our 2012 dates!

Dave and Liz Morrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10640374259097037992noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-653840656052414898.post-11647638803149513142012-01-19T21:31:00.003-08:002012-01-19T21:38:08.698-08:00The Rest of our Trip to Utah
Although we were all in Utah for my grandma’s funeral, I sure did have a great time spending time together with family. It was a couple days full of tears and laughs. My parents brought their Xbox Kinect and it provided hours of entertainment. My cousin Julie and Dave had us all laughing so hard in their Minute to Win It competition. It was hilarious! Here’s the video of one of the games.

<img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-bINI1kwdcWA/Txj9vgXmw9I/AAAAAAAAB9U/jpAQezBIKug/videob804c75eae23%25255B6%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="border-style: none" galleryimg="no" onload="var downlevelDiv = document.getElementById('e348af33-73da-4502-bb6c-d7c09198ca91'); downlevelDiv.innerHTML = "

";" alt="">

Dave and Julie

We also played Just Dance 3. We had been playing for a while and decided to have my sister Ashley play to see if being an actual dancer helps in this game. Verdict: most definitely. She dances about 30 hours a week at a dance studio and also attends a magnet High School that has a dance emphasis and it shows. She is so talented! Here’s one of Dave and Ashley. I love how Ashley even nails the head movements. The filming on this video is a bit poor. My Grandma Donna passed away on Christmas Eve which was bittersweet. She had cancer and it sounded like she was suffering quite a bit the few days prior to her passing. I am so glad she no longer has to suffer. She is my last and final grandparent to pass away. It’s kind of crazy to think that an entire generation of my family is gone. Her funeral, or as my uncle reminded us- a celebration of her life, was held in Utah. Even though these were bittersweet circumstances, I was pretty excited to see my immediate and extended family. Everyone was able to make it. I don’t remember the last time we were all together and so that was pretty cool.

The last time I had seen my grandma was the night before I moved to California. We thought she might have cancer, but it was not a sure thing at that point. I remember at the time I had a feeling this would probably be the last time I would see her in this life. She was in great spirits and I am glad this is how I get to remember my last time with her. The last thing she said to me was to send her letters. I thought this was cute because I’m so used to calling, texting, or emailing people, but her generation wrote letters.

Her viewing was held Thursday night. I really enjoyed looking at all of the pictures of my grandma throughout the years. She was always so stylish and fashionable. Some of her outfits from 60 years ago would still be in style today. She definitely had a classic look. A lot of friends and family members of her generation have already passed, but it was great to meet those who were able to come. I had never met her brother before and he is the cutest man. It was fun to get to know him and I could not believe his outlook on life. He too has cancer and still maintains the most positive attitude and approach to life. I was also able to meet some of my grandma’s friends that she always spoke so highly of- the Roses. It was kind of cool because one of the Rose girls told me about one of her memories of my grandma when she was a teenager. She was younger than my grandma and remembers looking at her and hoping that she could be as beautiful and well liked as my grandma when she was her age. This was interesting to me because whenever my grandma spoke of the Rose family it was always in a way that you could tell she really looked up to them and so it was neat to realize that they too looked up to her.

Pictures from the viewing

I was able to speak at my grandma’s funeral which was an honor. I am very intimidated by public speaking and have a hard time holding it together at funerals. Thankfully I made it through my talk (with a few tears, but it was a funeral afterall). I thought I would post a copy of my remarks not so everyone has to read them, but just so I can keep a copy of it.

“I am grateful for the opportunity I have to say a few words today. As I’ve been deciding what to say, it has given me the opportunity to reflect upon my relationship with my grandma. I decided one of the best ways I can honor her is by sharing some of the qualities I admire in my grandma.
First would have to be her passion. Whenever grandma was feeling sad, lonely or disheartened, you could instantly change her mood by bringing up certain topics. These were the things that would brighten her day and remind her of some of her most cherished memories.
Definitely one of her favorites was BYU. She loved her cougars. She would often talk about her days as a BYU student and how different BYU was when all the men were away at war. She was a proud alumni of BYU all the way to the end of her life. She loved BYU sports and was always a loyal fan.
Another thing she was passionate about was traveling. She often spoke of her many travels. She would always make me laugh when she’d recount that the other teachers she taught with at school would get jealous of all the time off she took to go on trips. Her favorite vacationing spot was hands down Hawaii. I had the opportunity to join her and grandpa on one of their trips to Hawaii. I’m not quite sure why they agreed to let me come along, but it sure was fun to see them in their element. Grandma was absolutely on cloud 9 as she sat next to the pool in paradise. They had all of their favorite restaurants and things they made sure to see. I remember asking Grandpa what he liked about visiting Hawaii and he replied, “I like coming to Hawaii because grandma loves it and it makes her happy.” I couldn’t agree more with that. It was one of her favorite places on Earth.
Which brings me to the thing she was probably most passionate about, and that was grandpa. The last few years of her life she definitely struggled with her role as a widow and understandably so. I remember visiting with her not too long ago and the topic of grandpa came up. She immediately started crying and expressed how much she missed him and how lonely she was without him. She missed her travel buddy and companion. I am so grateful that they have been reunited and can continue on their journey together.
Another quality I admire in grandma is her sense of humor. I don’t think she realized how entertaining she sometimes was, but she sure did make me laugh. My husband reminded me a few days ago of one of these instances. Grandma would always give me advice on getting married. Her most frequent counsel was that I could marry more in a minute than I could make in a lifetime. She definitely had a point. When she found out that I had chosen nursing as a career, she thought it was the perfect opportunity for me to find myself a rich doctor. When I went to visit her to tell her I was engaged, she immediately perked up and said, “oh so you found your rich doctor?” Her reaction was definitely priceless. I told her no. My fiancé was actually an accounting student, but he went to BYU. This definitely redeemed him in my grandma’s eyes.
The last quality that I would like to mention is my grandma’s love of family ties. She enjoyed doing genealogy and studying the lives of the early LDS church pioneers. She was always proud to be closely related to President Gordon B. Hinckley.
One of my most cherished memories of my grandma was when she was able to be present at the temple with me when I went through for the first time. I had invited her and told her I would love it if she could come. I knew this would be a big sacrifice for her because it required her to get dressed in her Sunday best and would require a lot of time and effort on her part. I had to get to the temple earlier than everyone else. I remember waiting in a room and wondering if my grandma would end up coming. It definitely made my day when I saw her walk in and I hope she knows how much that meant to me to have her there.
My grandma will definitely be missed, but her legacy will be honored as we focus on the example that she set for us all and as we remember the things that we admire about her. Elder Russell M Nelson once said in general conference,
“Life does not begin with birth, nor does it end with death. Prior to our birth, we dwelled as spirit children with our Father in Heaven. There we eagerly anticipated the possibility of coming to earth and obtaining a physical body. Knowingly we wanted the risks of mortality, which would allow the exercise of agency and accountability. “This life [was to become] a probationary state; a time to prepare to meet God.” But we regarded the returning home as the best part of that long-awaited trip, just as we do now. Before embarking on any journey, we like to have some assurance of a round-trip ticket. Returning from earth to life in our heavenly home requires passage through—and not around—the doors of death. We were born to die, and we die to live. As seedlings of God, we barely blossom on earth; we fully flower in heaven.”
I am grateful that my grandma has once again returned home to be surrounded by loved ones. I am forever thankful for my knowledge of the plan of salvation and that I know I will be able to see my grandma again. This knowledge is what gives me hope and comfort with the passing of a love one.”

All of the grandchildren and their spouses. It was unlike any other. Not in the fact that it was excellent, but in it’s uniqueness. It was much different than either of our families’ traditional Christmas festivities, but was the beginning to of some of our own traditions.

I had to work the couple days prior to Christmas, including Christmas Eve. I was absolutely thrilled because at my previous job I was supposed to work Christmas Eve and Christmas. I was ecstatic when I found out I had Christmas off at my new job- a much better schedule than I had anticipated. I remember three years ago when I worked my first Christmas. It was sad to miss Christmas with my family, but everything gets put into perspective when I see parents at work watching their baby fight for their life and I realize I don’t have it so bad. I am so blessed and probably see the true meaning of Christmas in a different way than if I were at home with family. Everything changed though when I got married. I have accepted the fact that I work holidays, and I’m fine with that, but I feel so bad because it now it impacts Dave too. Me missing the holidays with family also means Dave misses the holidays too.

I was so impressed with Dave because he took matters into his own hands. He decided that we should still have a nice Christmas Eve, even though it would just be the two of us. He made us a delicious turkey dinner complete with strawberry shortcake for dessert- which we both love. It was nothing short of impressive. He even remembered to set the table with our Christmas linens and everything. After dinner, Dave read us the story of Christ’s birth out of the Bible and then I headed to work. Dave and I love cinnamon rolls. Dave decided we should have cinnamon rolls for our Christmas morning breakfast. He not only made sure we had cinnamon rolls, but wanted homemade ones so he whipped out the bread maker and made the dough from scratch and all. They were absolutely delicious! He also made homemade smoothies which are another favorite around here. I’m so thankful that Dave made sure we still had a nice Christmas Eve and Christmas despite me being somewhat MIA.

We then hopped in the car and headed to Oregon to see Dave’s family. We spent a very short 24 hours in Oregon, but I’m so glad we were able to make it. This was my first Christmas with the Morris family as last year we celebrated with my family. It was a wonderful Christmas day. We had fun laughing, exchanging gifts, and celebrating.

On the 26th, in true Morris fashion there was a tennis match. She dances on the school dance team. As a senior, she can choose to be spotlighted at the winter or spring dance show. This means she gets to choreograph a solo and perform it at the show. She chose to do her dance at the winter show. She worked very hard on her dance and I was so excited to see it. She did an amazing job! I was so impressed that she not only choreographed the dance, but that she performed it solo- sounds pretty intimidating to me. She had a smile on her face the entire time. She also danced in probably 10 other dances which made the whole show fun. My nephew Benji sat on my lap during the show and he was hilarious. His commentary had me laughing out loud a couple of times. He is such a little comedian. My little niece Lauren was absolutely adorable. This was only the third time I’ve seen her and I can’t believe how big she’s gotten. She danced right along the entire show and was completely enamored. I think she might follow in her aunt Ashley and Amy’s footsteps and be a little ballerina. Great job Amy!

Amy’s fan club

Amy & Benji

A precious picture of Lauren with her dad and grandpa

Saturday night was the girl’s reverse dance at the high school. I got to help Amy get ready which was really fun. My sister-in-law Elyssa took Amy’s group pictures for the dance. I went so I could see Amy and her group and to help Elyssa position people in the pictures. This was quite an entertaining experience. There were, I think, 8 couples. We would position one couple and by the time we got to the 8th couple, the first couple would usually be unpositioned. You could tell they were all a little uncomfortable or felt awkward being that close or touching their date for too long. Probably a good thing, but it kept making me laugh. Positioning a couple for engagement or wedding pictures would definitely be easier:)

Amy and her date. She looked so pretty!

On Sunday, I got to have another Thanksgiving/ turkey dinner compliments to my mom. Yum! On Monday, my mom took the day off to spend time with me which was so nice of her. She had a brilliant idea for us to go and get massages. It was so nice and relaxing! Amy met up with us afterwards and we went and had lunch with my dad on a beautiful golf course. It was such a great weekend and I’m glad that I could be there for these fun events in Amy’s life.
Dave and Liz Morrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10640374259097037992noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-653840656052414898.post-56273910809530275682011-12-20T14:11:00.003-08:002011-12-20T19:24:40.518-08:00Christmas Festivities
Our Christmas season began with Dave & I picking out our Christmas tree from a tree lot. Last year was my first year in probably 20 years to have a real tree. I loved the real tree because it smelt so good, but I was a bit nervous to get one again. Last December, my legs were broken out in hives all month. It was quite obnoxious and uncomfortable. The only possibility that I thought might be causing the hives was our Christmas tree. It was basically the only new thing I could think of and the hives went away when we got rid of the tree. Quite odd. We decided to get a different variety of tree this year and see if it helped. I’m happy to say that our Christmas tree this year did not give me hives so I think I might be allergic to Douglas fir trees. Good to know.

Dave and I decorated the tree as soon as we brought it home. Dave was a good sport and ran to the store not once, but twice, to get more lights. I must have strung them a lot tighter than last year. I was so excited to decorate our tree so that I could display our new tree skirt. Last year when I was in Hawaii, I saw a tree skirt that I LOVED, but did not get it. My mom has a great memory and when my family was in Hawaii this year she remembered that I wanted it and bought it for me! I have such a thoughtful mom! It looks great under our tree.

Another festive thing we did this year was go to a Christmas Creche exhibit with another couple from our ward. A Creche is another name for the nativity scene which depicts the stable in which Christ was born. A church building in Palo Alto displayed over 500 Creches from 80 countries. It was an incredible display. Each room in the church had a theme. There were so many different types of Creches. They had the traditional wood, glass and ceramic nativities. There was even a life size manger scene and one made out of Legos. In true silicon valley form, they even had one carved in a computer chip. There was one made inside of an egg shell and one made on the tip of a pin that had to be viewed with a magnifying glass. There were so many beautiful ones. This was a great activity to remember the reason for the season. I think Dave and I will make it a Christmas tradition to attend this Creche exhibit. Unfortunately, pictures were not allowed inside the exhibit:(

Dave and I also went to San Francisco to see the city decorations. Union square was so beautiful. There was a giant tree and an ice skating rink. Macy’s department store was also quite impressive. Our friends recommended a couple of hotels to check out. The Westin Hotel had a 12-foot sugar castle on display. The details were quite impressive. We then took a very steep 6-block trek to the Fairmont Hotel to see a giant gingerbread house. It was a two-story house made out of 5,500 pieces of gingerbread, 850 pounds of icing, 425 pounds of candy and 8 gallons of chocolate. Wow. Apparently, the house has to be touched up every night because visitors snack on it throughout the day. My favorite part of visiting the gingerbread house was the “snowflake princess” that walked out of the house. The gingerbread house was built around a doorframe. Some sort of event behind this doorframe was getting out when we were there. All of a sudden this lady walked out and her outfit and headpiece were nothing short of comical! I hope she was dressed that way for a purpose and not because it was a festive outfit. Dave and I’s time together has been quite limited ever since we moved to California. It was nice to spend a night together laughing and enjoying the Christmas season!

<img style="background-image: none; Dave had not been home to Oregon for Thanksgiving in many years and this was the first year I didn’t have to work on Thanksgiving in 5 years. We were really looking forward to spending the holiday with Dave’s family! We headed to Oregon when I got home from work on Wednesday morning. Dave was very nice and drove the whole way while I attempted to sleep- sleeping in the car didn’t go over so well though:( We got to Dan and Cindy’s house a couple hours before dinner. Cindy and I worked on preparing some of the food for the Thanksgiving meal and then I went to bed because I was useless from exhaustion. I’m not really sure what everyone did the rest of the night, but I do know they were quiet because I slept right through it. Thanks everyone.

Thursday morning, Dave and Jake played in a Turkey Bowl. Their team won and they were pretty excited. That afternoon, Stacey, Jake and their kids came over along with Stacey’s family and we finished the last of the dinner preparations. Our Thanksgiving dinner was quite delicious! Cindy did an excellent job. My favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal was the stuffing (loved it) and the sweet potatoes (I really need to have sweet potatoes more than once a year). Later that evening, we looked through the ads and planned out our black Friday shopping adventure. Dave, Dan, Cindy and I went headed out shortly before midnight. I had never been black Friday shopping before, but I was well prepared as I stay up all night most every night. Our first stop was Best Buy. The store wasn’t open when we got there so Dave waited in the very long line while Dan, Cindy and I headed to some of the other stores. Dan went and picked Dave up after he was done while Cindy and I were in line at another store. We definitely divided and conquered the shopping. We ended up getting a lot of great deals and were home by 2am. Dave and I made our way back to California later that morning for work.

It was a short trip, but it was fun to celebrate Thanksgiving with the Morris family. I definitely have a lot to be grateful for and it’s great to have a day to reflect upon all of my many blessings.

The crew at Thanksgiving dinner- photo from Stacey

Black Friday shopping in our Oregon attire

Dave and Liz Morrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10640374259097037992noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-653840656052414898.post-49024390757758551822011-11-18T10:29:00.001-08:002011-11-18T10:55:20.299-08:00Newson Family Pictures
My family got family pictures taken a little bit ago and they turned out great. We really enjoyed visiting with them and we’re so happy they were able to come and see our new home. On Friday night, we hung out at our place and played games. Dave, Amy and I stayed up way too late trying to finish the Super Mario game we started last Christmas on our Wii. We are officially stumped on the last castle. Dave encouraged us by pointing out that we were capable of beating the game because his young nephews, Landon and Davis, beat it months ago. Maybe we’ll have to get tips from Landon and Davis at Christmas because we could not figure it out. We also went to Pinkberry to get frozen yogurt. I love Pinkberry! It is one of the reasons I was excited to move to California- embarrassing to admit, but it’s true.

On Saturday, we headed down to Santa Cruz and bought Dave a new car!!! He was pretty excited because he found exactly what he was looking for and the car is in excellent condition. He got a 2009 Honda Accord. It is black with a black leather interior. Great find Dave! In true Newson and Morris fashion- we are now the proud owners of 2 Hondas. Between our 2 families we have 14 Hondas. I’d say we’re pretty loyal to the Honda brand.

Saturday night we headed to San Francisco. My Dad is very familiar with San Francisco and made an excellent tour guide. I was surprised at how well he knew his way around. Definitely appears to be more of a local than Dave and I. We will have to bring him to San Francisco again when he is feeling better. We walked around Pier 39 and saw all of the fun shops. My parents treated us to a nice seafood dinner as a congratulations to Dave for passing his CPA tests! Congrats Dave! He passed all of his tests with flying colors on the first time. All of his hard studying from 5-8 every morning for the last 5 months paid off. With the help of EY, he is well on his way to getting all of his hours to make the CPA title official:) We also went to downtown San Francisco which I would love to go back to. Such a fun atmosphere. It reminded me a lot of Times Square in NYC. The biggest disappointment was definitely the Golden Gate Bridge. We went to see it and the lights were turned off. Big let down. Hopefully next time it won’t disappoint.

On Sunday, we went to church and then headed to Oakland as that is where everyone was flying out of. We stopped at the Oakland temple and Dave showed us around his old stomping grounds. I can’t wait to go back to the Oakland temple once all of the Christmas decorations are up. After we dropped my family off at the airport, Dave and I had a few hours before his flight so we headed to Lake Merritt. We decided to walk around the lake. It is 3.5 miles around the lake so it took a while, but was enjoyable. It was a beautiful day for being outside. I was so sad when I dropped Dave at the airport because I knew I had to go home to an empty house.

Thanks for coming and visiting mom, dad, and Amy! Hopefully this won’t replace you wanting to see it in person, but instead entice you with all of the available air mattress space :)

We’ve really been happy with our apartment so far. Some of our favorites things are: Our commutes are much shorter than in Utah. Dave is like 5-10 minutes from his office and I’m about 15-20 minutes from the hospital (luckily at 11pm there is no traffic). We have secure underground parking. Our building is a dog free building- perfect for non-animal lovers. We have new carpet and paint- big plus in Liz’s book. We have a huge patio. (I’m hoping to plant a square garden come spring). We have a washer and dryer which is hard to come by in California apartments. We have an onsite gym, tennis courts, 3 pools and hot tubs. We get a lot of shade during the day which makes it easier for me to sleep.
Dave and Liz Morrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10640374259097037992noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-653840656052414898.post-69434545684697583872011-10-29T13:24:00.001-07:002011-10-29T13:24:22.098-07:00Carving Pumpkins
Dave and I got together with our friends Scott and Cecilie and carved pumpkins. Her parents threw her and her fiancé, Chris, a party to celebrate their engagement. I was thrilled that I could attend this celebration! I don’t get to see Joy very often. It was great to not only get to see her, but her sister Fatima who is also a good friend. It was fun to get to catch up with them. It definitely felt like the good old days.

Chris is the perfect match for Joy and I couldn’t be more excited for them. Congrats to the happy couple!

The engagement party was in Santa Maria, CA which is a little over 3 hours south of San Jose. There is a beautiful beach a few miles north of Santa Maria. Dave and I decided to spend the afternoon at Pismo Beach. We had a great time. The weather was surprisingly pretty nice for October. There happened to be a clam festival on the pier the day we were there. There was also a surfing competition going on. It was completely by chance that we caught these events, but what a fun day to visit Pismo Beach. My favorite part of the beach was an amazing haunted house themed sand castle that this guy was building. I have never seen anything quite like this. He had so many tools and gadgets and created quite the masterpiece! It was mesmerizing to watch him build the sand castle.

I love that Dave and I live so close to the beach. We will definitely have to visit Pismo Beach again this summer.

Dave and Liz Morrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10640374259097037992noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-653840656052414898.post-34959576637155020922011-10-14T15:15:00.001-07:002011-10-14T15:15:51.417-07:00Livin’ the Dream Life
The past week and a half has been amazing! Dave and I are officially moved in and residents of San Jose, CA. The move went very smoothly. This is random, but good to know if anyone’s in the process of moving... We had a portable storage container company (ABF Moving) move our things for us and it made the move so easy. We packed the storage containers up in Utah, the company picked the up, drove them to CA, stored them for us until we were ready for them, dropped them off at our new place, we unloaded them, and then they picked them up. It was definitely the way to go for an 800 mile move. They were an easy company to work with and I would recommend them.

Cindy, Dave’s mom came down from Oregon to help us move in. She was so much help and it was nice to have company while Dave was at work everyday. Our friends Cecilie and Scott also came over to help us carry the big furniture. Poor Scott has a broken knee and was still willing to help out. We definitely owe them big time! Cindy and I spent the next couple of days unpacking and putting the apartment together. I’m really happy with how it turned out. This apartment is about the same size as our last apartment, but the layout is much different so it seems quite a bit larger. I’m still working on a couple of things and then I will put some pictures up of our new California pad.

For the past few days I have been working on decorating our apartment and making a few things I saw on Pinterest. I’ve loved this! Someone asked Dave the other day how I’m liking my new job. (It doesn’t start until Monday though). He said, “Well, she’s an interior decorator at the moment, so she’s loving her job.” It’s too bad being an interior decorator can’t be my real job. Turns out it doesn’t exactly pay the bills, it only creates them so on Monday it’s back to reality for me:( Here’s some pictures of the projects I’ve been working on.

I saw these roman shades on Pinterest and really liked the fabric so Cindy and I made our own version to fit the sliding glass door.

Inspiration

My tie-back version

I really liked these wreaths. We wanted to see the beautiful fall leaves. There were quite a few trees that had started changing colors and a lot that were still green. There probably would have been a lot more fall-colored leaves a week after we went, but it was our last chance so we went anyways. It was a great way to spend our last day together in Utah. Utah really does have a very beautiful fall season. I was glad that we got to spend another fall season in Utah, but am even more excited that I do not have to experience another Utah winter!!!!!

]

Dave and Liz Morrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10640374259097037992noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-653840656052414898.post-84568779667866315762011-09-25T13:15:00.001-07:002011-09-25T14:13:23.441-07:00Utah State Fair
One of my favorite things about the Fall season are fairs. I’m not quite sure why I like them so much, but it might have a lot to do with funnel cake. Dave, I, Ryan, and Kerali went to the Utah State Fair. The fair has such a fun environment and this year was no exception. One thing we did, that I hadn’t done in the past, was go down the giant yellow slide. It was really fun. I was surprised at how fast you got going. This is definitely my new favorite fair ride. When Dave got to the bottom of the slide, he pulled something out of his back pocket and said, “no wonder that kind of hurt.” He had a paring knife in his pocket. Someone from a cooking demonstration had given us this knife earlier in the evening. Dave stuck it in his back pocket because we didn’t know what else to do with it. Luckily it had cardboard around the blade so It hadn’t cut him. Lesson learned- don’t accept a paring knife when you don’t have anywhere to put it for the rest of the night. We stopped and saw the giant butter sculpture (which was to represent the royal wedding) and was quite impressive. We also watched a hypnotist show which was hilarious. I’m not quite sure how I feel about hypnosis, but one of the guys that was hypnotized was hilarious. He had quite the dance moves every time a Backstreet Boys song was played and made some pretty funny comments. We enjoyed a little too much deep fried fair food. My favorite was still the funnel cake. Dave tried a deep fried Snickers and really liked it. The grossest food item I saw was a deep fried Twinkie that had a slice of bacon stuffed in with the Twinkie filling. Sounds disgusting. It was a wonderful night of great company, food, and entertainment.

<img style="background-image: none; I love the weather, swimming pools, BBQ’s, the 4th of July, vacations, etc. This summer definitely did not disappoint. Dave and I were able to do so many fun things! It went by fast and was very busy. I remember looking at my calendar in May and realizing everyday of the summer was planned out. If we were in town, Dave and I were both working and on the days I had off, we were pretty much out of town. It was a summer of living out of a suitcase, coming home to do the laundry, and then packing our suitcases back up. I wouldn’t choose to have it any other way though. We were able to spend lots of time with family and friends and make many great memories.

This summer has been bittersweet at the same time. We knew it was our last summer living in Utah and tried to take advantage of it. I made a bucket list at the beginning of the summer and we were able to do a lot of the things on the list. It’s been crazy to think that some of the people that we see on a regular basis, we will not get to see as often after we move.

This summer has also been one of the most stressful times of my life. I am definitely excited for Dave and I to start a new chapter in our lives as we move to California, but the logistics of moving were completely overwhelming at times. Between finding somewhere to live, finding a job, figuring out how to afford to live somewhere so expensive, arranging a moving truck, etc. The job hunt definitely topped the list. I have a job that I absolutely love and feel very lucky to have. I do something that is very rewarding and I have the greatest co-workers. I realize my career is not my life, but a full-time job ends up being where I spend a lot of my time and so it’s great to do something I enjoy so much.

I began applying for jobs in California in May and quickly realized how hard it was going to be to find a job doing exactly what I wanted. I would get so frustrated applying for jobs that I didn’t really want just because I was feeling so much pressure to find a job within a deadline. Poor Dave had to deal with me when I would get so frustrated. I was definitely in a bad mood on more than one occasion. This made it hard to be genuinely excited about any aspect of the move. I would associate this frustration with the whole moving process. I am also a planner as my mom pointed out. I function much better and more productively when things are planned out. I think this was the root of my frustration. Having this huge piece of living in California up in the air majorly stressed me out. I am not very patient at times and this process definitely required patience. Dave would always reassure me that things would work out, but I just didn’t see that happening a lot of the time. He was right though. Everything fell into place at the end of August. I ended up getting offered an excellent job that I’m excited about. It will be different than what I do now in a lot of ways, but I think it will probably be good for me in the long run. We found somewhere to live that Dave and I are both very excited about. My generous aunt and uncle offered up their home to us for a month while we didn’t have anywhere to live. I finally think about moving and am 100% excited about it.

Dave and I are enjoying our last couple of weeks in Utah, but are looking forward to the new place we will soon call home. It’s crazy to think about leaving somewhere so familiar to go somewhere completely unfamiliar, but I am excited for the adventure. We are planning on settling down in California and living there long term or possibly forever. We’ll have to see what the future holds. I am really excited to live somewhere where I don’t feel like it is a temporary phase of my life. That is definitely how I have felt for the last 7 years. So to Utah we say goodbye.

The next few blog posts recap our amazing summer and all of the memories we made.
Dave and Liz Morrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10640374259097037992noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-653840656052414898.post-5464706488097279662011-09-16T13:39:00.000-07:002011-09-16T13:43:37.218-07:00Date Night
Dave and I had 2 weekends this whole summer that we were both in town and that I was not working. For one of them, 2 of my sisters came into town- more on that later. For the other weekend, we decided to go on a date. We thought it would be fun to go mini golfing at Mulligans. We were waiting in line when we saw our good friends Jeff and Lizzy. They were there with Lizzy’s family who were in town. Dave and I joined up with them for mini golfing and batting cages. It was such a fun night. We’re glad we got to hang out with Jeff and Lizzy. They are moving to Michigan for Jeff to attend law school and so it might be a while before we will get to go on a double date again. Until next time…

Dave and Liz Morrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10640374259097037992noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-653840656052414898.post-32770798101983537402011-09-16T13:38:00.000-07:002011-09-16T13:45:29.286-07:00Yard Work
My grandpa and grandma Newson passed away quite a few years ago. My family has spent countless hours working on their home after they passed. We completely remodeled it and it is beautiful! It is such a charming home and has so many cute features. I was the only Newson living in Utah at the time of the upstairs remodel and so I was very involved. Anyone who knows me well, knows that I love interior design and decorating. HGTV is by far my favorite TV channel. My favorite shows deal with flipping houses. Helping to flip my grandpa’s house was like HGTV first-hand. It was a ton of work, but I thought it was fun and I learned a lot. I can say I have painted the entire interior of of house, scraped the sparkly cottage cheese looking ceiling finish off, retextured a ceiling, pulled carpet and tack strips out, patched numerous holes in the wall, and much more. It’s rewarding to go in the house and see the transformation that I was a part of. My dad uses this house as a rental property now. It is the home he grew up in and that his dad built with his own hands. It has a lot of sentimental value.

New tenants were moving in and so Dave and I decided (mostly me) to get the yard in good condition before they moved in. I happen to love doing yard work, weird I know, and so I was kind of excited about this. The backyard has a huge garden area and this is what needed the most attention. It had not been torn up at the end of the previous harvest and so it was a little out of control. We spent a couple of days working on the yard and it looked much improved by the end. I forgot to take pictures before we started, but here are some of the after shots.

Dave and Liz Morrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10640374259097037992noreply@blogger.com1
